Scout-led food drive returns to reel in donations after 2020 pandemic interruption

The Maplewood Fire Department garage bustled with activity Saturday morning as a steady line of cars rolled through the doors on either end, carrying blue bags and even wagons full of donations to food banks — along with the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts responsible for rounding all of it up.

As vehicles came through — with drivers, scouts and scout leaders unloading their contents — donations piled ever higher in giant plastic crates, reinforced with metal. Each crate fit hundreds of cans, and the goal was to fill eight of them at the site if possible.

Similar scenes played out Saturday at other firehouses across the St. Louis region and the United States as part of the national Scouting for Food event — hailed as the country’s largest single-day food drive. Read more. . .
