We are seeking ten candidates to serve as Hunger Relief AmeriCorps Members, with a placement at Operation Food Search’s Summer Meals Program, located at 1644 Lotsie Boulevard, Overland, MO 63132.
AmeriCorps programs provide opportunities for Americans to make an intensive commitment to service. The AmeriCorps network of local, state, and national service programs engages more than 80,000 Americans in projects around the nation each year.
Founded in 1981, Operation Food Search (OFS) is a hunger relief organization that provides food and nutrition education. With a strategic focus aimed at ending childhood hunger, OFS empowers families with a range of programs and services proven to reduce food insecurity and increase access to healthy and affordable food. OFS helps feed more than 200,000 individuals on a monthly basis – one-third of whom are children – through a network of 330 community partners in 31 Missouri and Illinois counties, as well as in the city of St. Louis.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Minimum-Time AmeriCorps members will serve a total of 300 hours from May 22 to August 11. Members will serve about 30 hours per week helping OFS recruit sites to expand our mobile meals program and develop a number of activities to engage children at mobile meal sites throughout the summer.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Summer Duties (June-August): All summer members’ activities are related to operations of a summer food program that provides food to children as part of the Summer Food Service Program. Specific activities will vary, but can include loading and unloading food onto vans, delivering food to communities, and interacting with children. Members will be expected to lift dozens of containers weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Help run “mini-camps” at mobile sites, interact with children and supervise volunteers.
- Ride on mobile trucks and hand out meals to children and complete meal count sheets at each site.
- Conduct site reviews for mobile and stationary sites.
- Monitor records to make sure that all sites are submitting paperwork promptly.
REQUIREMENTS AND COMPENTENCIES
- 18 years old or older
- US Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs
- Able to commit to 30 hours/ week from May 22 to August 11
- Must have own transportation to get to meal sites.
- Must enjoy working in groups and working with children, especially in large groups.
- Comfort with and willingness to travel to sites around St. Louis city/county and surrounding areas
- Flexible, adaptable, and resourceful in unexpected situations
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task
- Able to work independently and within a team
- Public speaking skills
- Comfort and willingness to speak on the phone
- Computer skills (Outlook, Excel, Office)
- Ability to balance a variety of tasks simultaneously
- Driver’s license and good driving record
- Strong interest in hunger and poverty
TERMS & BENEFITS
- Minimum-Time AmeriCorps members will serve a total of 300 hours from May 22 to August 11
- Minimum-time members will receive a living allowance of $1,800, broken down into bi-weekly payments and an education award of $1,230.69 at the end of the term that can be used for existing student loans or future education expenses like tuition and books
