We asked Cooking Matters Nutrition Instructor Danielle Cherry, a nutrition professional, how her volunteer experience impacts her professional life. Here’s what she had to say:
I view my profession in a different light. I realize being hands on with participants can make all the difference in the world when teaching them about nutrition. It’s important to teach nutrition in a fun and interactive way, especially when working with kids. I hope I can make a difference in someone’s life by giving them tools to empower them to make healthier food choices.
Cooking Matters has definitely had an impact on where I see myself in ten years. I would like to see myself continue to work in some capacity with the local community where I live. My ideal job would incorporate teaching nutrition to different age groups and giving advice on how to fit healthy eating into participants’ lifestyles. I love interacting with people and hope I can continue to in the future of my career.
Before volunteering at Cooking Matters, I had never had much experience with teaching kids about healthy eating. I thought teaching nutrition would be a good challenge to familiarize myself with this age group. Each session I learn something new about interacting with kids and have grown to really enjoy spending time with them during each class.
